A combination of injuries and a nasty flu-like virus put 6 Thames oarsmen out of action and led Head Coach Tony Larkman and Captain Will Pressley to make the difficult decision that TRC could not boat a first eight for the race. This was relayed to London on Saturday but the clubs were unable to agree a change of schedule. As such, LRC rowed over and were deemed to have won by default.
The second and third eights' races were held as planned, from the University Boat Race stone at Putney, to Mortlake. In the second eights' race, Thames took an immediate advantage and had achieved clear water by the Black Buoy. As London, on the Middlesex station, aimed to maximise the advantage from the bend in their favour as the crews passed Fulham football ground, Thames held their nerve and cox Sophie Shapter held an excellent line. By the Mile Post, Thames were well in control and pulled away to a very comfortable win. This was an excellent result for the second eight, and consistent with their strong performances in recent head races and in training.
In the third eights' race, Thames took the lead at the start but were soon pegged back by a London crew that quickly settled to a strong rhythm. London gained clear water close to Barn Elms and went on to a convincing win.
It was a shame for all concerned that Thames were obliged to default the race, but this did at least allow the second and third eights to race their opposite numbers without disruption. | |
